Entropic Attraction and Repulsion in Binary Colloids Probed with a Line Optical Tweezer
نویسندگان
چکیده
The long-range entropic forces that arise between two micrometer-sized colloidal spheres in a fluid of much smaller colloidal spheres were directly measured using a line-scanned optical tweezer. This new technique allowed us to measure the functional form of the potential with sub-kBT energy and 15 nm spatial resolution. At the lowest small sphere concentrations, the potential was monotonically attractive, while at higher concentrations an oscillatory potential was observed, due to the liquid structure of the small spheres. Surprisingly, the large spheres came together only rarely at the higher concentrations, suggesting a new means for stabilizing suspensions using entropy alone. [S0031-9007(99)09246-7]

Energetic and entropic forces governing the attraction between polyelectrolyte-grafted colloids.
The energetic and entropic interactions governing the attraction between like-charged colloidal particles grafted with oppositely charged polyelectrolyte chains in a monovalent electrolyte are investigated computationally. We employ coarse-grained models of the colloids with varying surface and polyelectrolyte charges and Monte Carlo simulations to compute the potential of mean force between tw...
متن کاملEntropic Colloidal Interactions in Concentrated DNA Solutions
We explore the entropic interactions between a pair of micron-sized colloidal spheres in DNA solutions. By confining the particles in a line-scanned optical tweezer, we directly measured the functional form of the interaction potential with sub-kBT resolution in samples where the spheres and the polymer coils were of comparable size. The potential is well described by the Asakura-Oosawa depleti...
متن کاملSpontaneous Formation of Eutectic Crystal Structures in Binary and Ternary Charged Colloids due to Depletion Attraction
Crystallization of colloids has extensively been studied for past few decades as models to study phase transition in general. Recently, complex crystal structures in multi-component colloids, including alloy and eutectic structures, have attracted considerable attention. However, the fabrication of 2D area-filling colloidal eutectics has not been reported till date. Here, we report formation of...
متن کاملMultiple glassy states in a simple model system.
Experiments, theory, and simulation were used to study glass formation in a simple model system composed of hard spheres with short-range attraction ("sticky hard spheres"). The experiments, using well-characterized colloids, revealed a reentrant glass transition line. Mode-coupling theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the reentrance is due to the existence of two...
متن کاملWith a little help of DNA: Morphological diversity of colloidal self-assembly
We study theoretically a binary system in which an attraction of unlike particles is combined with a type–independent soft core repulsion. The possible experimental implementation of the system is a mixture of DNA–covered colloids, in which both the repulsion and the attraction may be induced by DNA solution. The system is shown to exhibit surprisingly diverse and unusual morphologies. Among th...
